Football

Shadow Youth Alliance (SYA) has a strong sense of identity in football, having been born as a football club before developing into a fully fledged organisation catering for the community’s health and fitness needs.

Our purpose is to engage with young people who are disaffected in society into mainstream provisions through sports. SYA aim to reduce anti social behaviour, crime and drug use within the local community.

Our Aim:

  • Increase regular participation in sports and physical activities.
  • Improve quality of life.
  • Encourage interaction of young people from different cultures and backgrounds.
  • To develop social and personal skills of the young people in order for them to access education, training and employment.
  • Reduce youth offending.
  • Work closely with our partners and stakeholders to develop young people into footballers, coaches and referees.

Shadow Youth Alliance has outreach work to make contact with young people at risk of disengagement and provides sporting programmes targeting participation as an alternative to anti-social behaviour. Using training and mentoring programmes to promote healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes with a focus on leadership skills based around sport.

Shadow Youth Alliance (SYA) therefore has a structured football programme incorporating both junior, senior and veteran (age over 35) teams. It has a long history of developing young players, who move onto playing for various semi-professional football clubs within London such as Sporting Bengal. We aim to create a pathway for local young people to play at the highest standard possible. Through our football we have involved over 40 nationalities and over 150 participants in the various teams.

The football clubs are affiliated with London Football Association and are members of Inner London Football League (ILFL) and Bangladesh Football Association (BFA) summer league. If anyone is interested in joining any of the football teams please get in contact with us for more information: info@shadowyouthalliance.co.uk or call on 07956 000551.

    Youth academy

In the year 2003-04 we set up the Under-16 football team. The team played in the Sports Network Council’s (SNC) under-16 league and then onto Bangladesh Football Association (BFA) Summer League and also London Tigers Astro Winter League - now known as SYA B. Due to the valuable experience and teamwork gained from the SNC League the youth team was able to compete and match the other well established teams in the league.

Due to the growing needs of the local community and popularity of SYA, we are currently developing our academy to include Under 12’s, Under 14’s, Under 16’s and Youth team (ages between 17 to 24). We currently have open training sessions for these teams every Tuesday and Thursday and matches are played every Saturday. The teams are coached by FA qualified couches. Our aim is to work in a safe environment and provide quality coaching and advice to the young people in attendance. The sessions are designed to improve fitness, skills and interaction. Everybody is most welcome to attend regardless of background or ability. Please ensure your children have a bottle of water, are wearing sports gear and the appropriate footwear.

Tuesday training sessions are held at Oaklands secondary school pitch; Old Bethnal Green Road, London E2 6PR from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Thursday training sessions are held at Weavers field; Bethnal Green, Vallance Road, London E2 6HD from 5.30pm to 7.00pm.

    Senior team

Shadow Youth Alliance (SYA) seeks to provide pathways for our beneficiaries to progress from grassroots to professional competition. There are also those who simply enjoy taking part in sport at an amateur level and we aim to deliver sports activities that are accessible to local people, taking into account location, cost implications to beneficiaries, language barriers and cultural/religious sensitivities.

In the year 2003-04 the senior team was set-up with 30-35 players. Although the team was not playing in any leagues that year the training sessions and many friendly matches that were played and was used in shaping a strong team, for both the BFA (Bangladesh Football Association) Summer League and the ILFL (Inner London Football League) Winter league.

SYA has now grown into two senior team’s, SYA A team and SYA B team with over 35 players registered for both teams. Training sessions take place every Thursday from 7pm to 8.30pm at Weavers field; Bethnal Green, Vallance Road, London E2 6HD

    Veteran team

In 2013, Shadow Youth Alliance set up its first Vet’s team primarily made up of previous senior players who played for SYA A and SYA B teams. The aim of this team was to encourage retired players and people who do not play regularly, over the age of 35 to continue live a healthy lifestyle. League matches take place every Thursday from 7pm at Mile End Stadium, 190 Burdett Rd, Mile End, London E3 4HL.
